Two industrial sites in North Carolina received funding this month from the Economic Development Partnership of North Carolina to help prepare the properties for future business investment.
The two sites – Mid-Atlantic Industrial Rail Park Megasite, or MAIRP, in Brunswick County and the Mitchell Business Park in Mitchell County – participated in the Megasite Readiness Program and Selectsite Readiness Program, respectively.
Brunswick County received $6.275 million for the aid of development at MAIRP in an effort to make it more site ready. That includes site clearing, rail bed construction, and wetland mitigation credits.
The MAIRP Megasite spans 1,100 acres and sits just 12 miles from an international airport and 18 miles from the Port of Wilmington, making it one of the prime areas for large-scale development on the East Coast.
In Mitchell County, the community will receive over $81,000 for site due diligence activities for the Mitchell Business Park Selectsite. The site is approximately 90 acres in size and features public control of the property and infrastructure capability.
“Brunswick and Mitchell counties are taking advantage of programs designed to bring high-paying jobs to North Carolina,” said Garrett Wyckoff, Product Development Program Manager for the EDPNC. “The Megasite and Selectsite Readiness programs have already brought new investment to our state, and I’m pleased to see these two communities taking the next step in bringing more jobs to their communities.”
About the Megasite Readiness Program
The North Carolina General Assembly established the Megasite Readiness Program as part of the state’s 2022-23 budget legislation, and substantial funding was added the next year. The aim of the program is to identify potential megasites throughout the state, and support local governments in upgrading infrastructure and performing other due diligence to make them more desirable for companies. Megasites are typically defined as sites over 1,000 acres in size that can house one or more large corporate tenants.
About the Selectsite Readiness Program
The North Carolina General Assembly enacted the NC Selectsite Readiness Program during the 2023-24 legislative budget as a complement to the Megasite Readiness Program. The Selectsite Readiness Program focuses on smaller properties, some of which are under 100 acres, that are still capable of attracting advanced manufacturing companies and new jobs to communities across North Carolina.
